BWF World Tour Finals: HS Prannoy loses to Japan’s Naraoka in opener

India’s H.S. Prannoy suffered a defeat against Japan’s Kodai Naraoka in his first match of the BWF World Tour finals in Bangkok on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old Prannoy lost the first game 12-21 and mounted a comeback by winning the second game 21-9. The fifth-seeded Naraoka, however, held his nerve in a tense decider game where he pipped Prannoy 21-17.

Prannoy is the only Indian to be part of the BWF World Tour finals. He will take on China’s Lu Guangzu in his second match on Thursday followed by the final group match against top seed Viktor Axelsen on Friday.

The top-two players from the group will qualify for the semifinals of the singles tournament that comprises the top eight ranked players in the world based on their performances in 2022.
