After a dirty performance in the 2010 final and the ignominy of losing the Battle of Nuremberg in 2006, 2014 brought back some of the qualities that we love so much about the Dutch.
They were free-flowing in attack, with pace on the wings and a rapid counter to stun just about anyone in their way. They had a box office frontman up top, a world-class winger and a manager prepared to throw the dice and do the unexpected.
That certainly happened in the quarter-final of the competition. We won’t give too much away but as you’ll see from the positions of the substitutes, Louis van Gaal brought on a goalkeeper for the penalty shootout.
It worked, too, the absolute mad man. The Netherlands went on to fall to Argentina – but for a brief spark, they were back to their brilliant, unpredictable best.
